BG readers will know well the old proverb, “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink”. For those who don’t, herewith the British Bullshitting Commissariat’s explanation (https://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/language/2012/09/120924_todays_phrase_horse_to_water.shtml) – which is acurate.

Every year the BBC broadcast the Eurovision song contest. This year it is the turn of Sweden to host the event (https://eurovision.tv/event/malmo-2024).

I’ve already commented upon this event (https://british-gazette.com/its-not-about-the-performance-its-about-politics/) when I strongly deprecated the abuse Miss Golan (the Israeli contestant) had been subjected to.

The UK entrant a Mr Alexander it seems has previously called for an “immediate and lasting ceasefire” in Gaza, but refused calls to boycott the event.

Well, I have some news for Mr Alexander. Having seen a clip on GB News previewing his performance I am not going to view any part of this event.

Mr Alexander has a Wikipedia article about him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olly_Alexander

Were I to state openly in this blog-post what I thought of Mr Alexander and what is the UK’s entry into the Eurovision song contest, I would not only create problems for myself but also for the parochial parish council and the deanery synod on which bodies I sit.

Why?

Because the C of E require (because of statute law) all such persons to be DBS checked to the enhanced level. This reveals any criminal convictions including spent convictions and also any details of arrests and questioning.

You see, were I to post what I thought of Mr Alexander and the UK’s 2024 entry, it would more than likely bring about a member of the PC brigade resident in Scotland to report me to Police Scotland for a “non crime hate incident.”

The problem the C of E has is one it shares with a vast number of organisations who rely on the efforts and services of volunteers to enable them to operate in the way they wish.

Were they compelled to ask for my resignation or to eject me from these committees they would have to prevail upon yet another volunteer to come forward.
