The logic behind the quote is very simple. If one was able to know the future, one would seek to benefit from it – or change it – if one could. One of the most self serving examples is where a person travels into the future, obtains the numbers of a winning lottery draw, goes back in time to say a minute after one left, then buy a lottery ticket with the winning numbers, wait and collect the money!
Of course, this is impossible!
Just over a decade ago, I and many others were campaigning for BREXIT.
Go back to the BG’s blog-posts at the time and you will see that I was promoting a “soft Brexit” in the form of “Flexcit” a variation of the “Norway Option”.
A couple of days ago, Keir Starmer resigned as the UK’s Prime Minister and King Charles III appointed Andrew Burnham to the post as Mr Burnham had become the new Leader of the Labour Party and therefore could command the House of Commons.
In June 2016, I did NOT anticipate that Donald Trump would be elected as the 45th President of the USA on 8th November, 2016 and (in 2016) be subsequently re-elected as the 47th President of the USA on 5th November, 2024.
Before the re-election of Donald Trump, I posted on the BG blog that IMHO the 2024 Presidential election was – for the UK – going to be the most significant US Presidential election since the election of 1940.
I have been proved right!
The impulsive, reckless and ill thought out actions of Mr Trump – a man who some suggest might be suffering from Alzheimer’s disease – have caused much disruption across the world.
There are accusations and allegations of corrupt practises within the Trump administration.
Mr Burnham – and everybody else in the UK – may be soon facing some dramatic negative consequences of policy decisions enacted by Mr Trump that will demonstrate beyond per adventure that had the UK’s electorate had voted 52% to 48% Remain and not 52% to 48% Leave, these negative consequences would be a mere fraction of the severity faced.
This of course will be heralded by those vociferously campaigning for the UK’s re-entry into the EU – such as a certain Mr Steven Bray (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Bray) as proof that Brexit has been a disaster!
These things could be overstated. However, it might be the case that Mr Trump’s actions – could provoke certain actions carried out by a certain Mr Putin – will have such a plethora of severely dramatic consequences that will cause the members of the EU’s political establishment together with the UK’s political establishment to reach the joint conclusion that UK re-entry plus the replacement of a reformed Western European Union to replace NATO is the least worst option!
