IF – and it is a very very big “if” – the above were repeated at the next General Election the UK would have dug itself further into a hole. Not for nothing to the Americans call the “First past the Post” voting system, “the two party system”. This because it only works properly when there are two candidates/parties contesting each seat!
A result based on the above voting pattern would be disastrous as Labour would be the largest party but devoid of a proper mandate to govern. Furthermore, the minor parties such as the Lib-Dems would have few MPs to create a stable coalition majority.
What is needed is a change to the way we elect our MPs.
