Brexit: Taking back control means: Giving up control

The above montage shows Mrs Emmeline Pankhurst between two women leaders. On 6th February 1918, the Representation of the People Act received the Royal assent and some women got the vote for the second time in these islands for in 1881, the Isle of Man (in the British Isles but not part of the United Kingdom) passed a law giving the vote to single and widowed women who passed a property qualification. This was to vote in elections for the House of Keys, in the island’s parliament, Tynwald. This was extended to universal suffrage for men and women in 1919.
Today, were she alive Mrs Pankhurst would be able to witness the triumph and the tragedy of her efforts for not only have women got the vote, they have achieved the highest offices. One of the things one hears from what are now described as feminists is who “womens equality” and the “breaking of the glass ceiling” will being forth a new gentler kind of politics.
Bullshit!
The triumph achieved by the suffragettes and the suffragists a century ago has borne out the FACT that despite/notwithstanding the biological differences, men and women end up in the same deep, deep hole when circumstances dictate!
It is a curious historical FACT that the cause of Mrs Pankhurst’s difficulties in getting her idea of equal suffrage acted upon was due to the dead hand of Irish politics. You see, at the beginning of the 20th Century the Liberal Party was quite open to the idea of women’s suffrage. In that sense the suffragists would have been pushing at an open door. However the direct actions of the suffragettes effectively torpedoed this for the British political establishment felt that it was impossible to give way on the issue for to give way after such direct action would only encourage the sectarian parties of Ireland into such action.
Ireland, and the deep sectarian divisions was the millstone around the British neck for the first two decades of the twentieth century as well as the entirety of the nineteenth century – and before that!
It is a FACT that Ireland will be the rock on which Brexit founders.
When Madame Mayhem states that “regulatory divergence” within the United Kingdom is something that no British Prime Minister or government can accept she is sounding more like Edward Carson than a modern 21st Century British politician!
That this is utter, utter, bullshit of the first order is demonstrated that following the establishment of the largely autonomous province of Northern Ireland in 1922. It is still the case today! Abortion and what is termed “Gay marriage” are not allowed in Northern Ireland. Women wanting terminations and people wishing to marry a person of the same gender have to do these things in mainland Great Britain. If that is not “regulatory divergence”, WTF is?
What the EU27 will have witnessed over the past two years is the tragedy of the Orange tail wagging the British dog. They have seen a British government paralysed into a state of inaction and impotency.
Let us be clear: There is only one Brexit solution that does NOT involve a border between the UK and the Irish Republic. That is where the UK LEAVES the EU but remains IN the EEA AND the EU’s Customs Union – indefinitely!
If the UK desires other than being a vassal state of the EU without the power to influence many of the laws made for it, then there HAS to be a border between the Irish Republic and the United Kingdom.
The question is: Where will be that border?
There is a choice: It can be across the island of Ireland – which causes the UK to be in breach of the Good Friday Agreement – an international treaty.
OR: It can be down the Irish Sea with Northern Ireland remaining inside the EU’s Customs Union and the EEA.
It seems that If a hard/no deal Brexit is to be avoided it will be by the entire UK remaining in the IN the EEA AND the EU’s Customs Union – indefinitely!
This is NOT taking BACK control. It is GIVING UP control!
