Uneasy lies the crown!

Today there occurs a confluence of dates. On this day, Gaius Julius Caesar (13th July 100 BC – 15th March 44 BC) was assassinated on the day the Romans knew as the Ides of March. Caesar of course is known in these British Isles as a conqueror.
The Romans did not number days of a month sequentially from the first through the last day. Instead, they counted back from three fixed points of the month: the Nones (5th or 7th, depending on the length of the month), the Ides (13th or 15th), and the Kalends (1st of the following month). The Ides occurred near the midpoint, on the 13th for most months, but on the 15th for March, May, July, and October. The Ides were supposed to be determined by the full moon, reflecting the lunar origin of the Roman calendar. On the earliest calendar, the Ides of March would have been the first full moon of the new year.
Today marks another auspicious point in the calendar – ours and Rome’s! For on this day we are 100 days from “D Day” 23rd June 2016 the polling day for Brexit. One hundred days of course again has a historical resonance.
The Hundred Days, sometimes known as the Hundred Days of Napoleon or Napoleon’s Hundred Days, marked the period between Napoleon’s return from exile on the island of Elba to Paris on 20th March 1815 and the second restoration of King Louis XVIII on 8th July 1815 (a period of 111 days). This period saw the War of the Seventh Coalition, and includes the Waterloo Campaign, the Neapolitan War as well as several other minor campaigns. The phrase les Cent Jours (the hundred days) was first used by the prefect of Paris, Gaspard, comte de Chabrol, in his speech welcoming the king back to Paris on 8th July.
So we have a day which marks the anniversary of Caesar’s assassination and the start of a period marking Napoleon’s escape to his defeat at Waterloo.
And then of course we have the Chameleon bottom right, pictured deep in thought, and looking far from a happy bunny!
At this point the Chameleon must know that he is 100 days away from the point that will mark the end of his political career OR confirm him as an arch-Traitor for working so hard to keep the formerly sovereign United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from becoming once again a sovereign nation.
