It is no doubt fitting that on this day 15th April, 769 AD, when the Lateran Council condemned the Council of Hieria and anathematized its iconoclastic rulings, that the leader of the political party whose very existence is an anathema to the Europhile parties, Mr Nigel Farage, launched UKIP’s 2015 Manifesto.

British Gazette comment: UKIP say that the manifesto is fully costed by an independent source. Then we will take them at their word.
A practical suggestion however: UKIP talk about increasing defence spending. On that topic of defence, we would suggest that the two aircraft carriers that are currently under construction should be speeded up as that will reduce the cost and that the UK’s order for the over budget F-35 aircraft is either cancelled or cutback to the contractual minimum and that these ships should be completed as “Commando carriers” equipped with a mix of heavy lift helicopters, battlefield attack helicopters and anti-submarine anti-shipping helicopters plus the ability to embark around 250 Royal Marines.
This would give the Royal Navy a much enhanced ability to send in forces to trouble spots for short periods of time. Equipping these ships as strike carriers is not only too expensive, they lack the ability to operate proper AEW aircraft and would have to operate in support of a USN carrier group – under US control which of course means that these ships would in effect be in the service of the USA and not the UK.
The Commando carriers would not be able to properly defend themselves against a serious naval threat but the likelihood is that the “trouble spots” of which we speak will be in third world failed states where the enemy will be AK-47 touting insurgents.
