The Rt. Hon. Harriet Harman, P.C., M.P. a.k.a. Ms. Harridan Harperson, our dearly beloved Minister for Women and Equality, wishes to ask all of us about our sexual orientation in the forthcoming 2011 census.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS), which compiles the census, has told her that the idea is daft as many people will not tell the truth about their sexuality.
Harriet however remains undaunted. She claims that the question needs to be asked so she can measure the success of her equality legislation.
Harriet dear, have you ever heard of the law of unintended consequences ?
Let us explain. Many years ago now, parliament legalised homosexuality between consenting adults. For many years it has been a criminal offence to knowingly record false information on a census. Thus when many homosexuals who, to coin a phrase, “have not come out of the closet” state that they are heterosexual, they will be committing a criminal offence. Of course it would be very unlikely that a charge would ever be brought, but the fact remains that Harriet will have criminalised many homosexuals by following her pet obsession. Not what she intended at all.
