Those of us men who are either married or have a “significant other” will know the dire consequences awaiting them should they forget an anniversary!
Generally speaking, humans of both genders attach great importance to dates. This of course explains the vast resources that Ancient Britons devoted to the construction of Stonehenge above.
Saturday July 4 2026 will be the United States Semiquincentennial (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Semiquincentennial).
This for every American is a very important occasion. It means a LOT to them! And for one American in particular: President Donald J. Trump!
In the wake of the Maduro Raid, deeply worried European political leaders are communicating amongst themselves about an event that only a few years ago would have been rejected by any book publisher or film/movie studio as being too outlandish: the military occupation of Greenland by US forces and it’s annexation by the USA.
IF US forces were to invade Greenland, the obvious and most sensible time is in the summer! Thus, we can expect that IF President Trump is determined to annex Greenland a good time would be June 2026 so the annexation can be presented to the American public on Independence Day.
The summer solstice (longest day) takes place this year on Sunday, 21 June.
Given that the longest day is a Sunday, US forces might chose the following day, Monday 22 June 2026.
If so, the date has some relevance to the UK as it is the feast day of Saint Alban. Alban was a soldier in the imperial Roman army of Diocletian. A convert, he brought to the faith by Saint Amphibalus of Verulam whom he had sheltered. He was the first martyr in Britain, dying in the persecutions of Diocletian. Death c.303 at Verulam (Verulamium) (modern Saint Albans).
For Roman Catholics, it is also the feast day of their Saint, Sir Thomas More. He was beheaded on 6 July 1535 on Tower Hill, London.
Thus, IF US forces choose Monday 22 June 2026 as the day of their invasion of Greenland, Sir Keir Starmer will have his own moment of reckoning when he knows that action he will take will have significant consequences for him, his colleagues and the country.
Be in NO doubt, IF President Trump decides to cross this particular Rubicon, the consequences WILL be catastrophic and momentous.
It is extremely doubtful that Denmark or her allies will take any military action against US forces. This would not mean that individual Greenlanders armed with hunting rifles would not take “pot shots” at US servicemen.
What then would the consequences be?
What action would the EU and other NATO allies not in the EU take?
Well, in conjunction with Australia, New Zealand and Japan the United Kingdom and most of the EU member states may decide to dump US Treasuries – en mass!
Were they to do this in the days after a US invasion, to describe the results as being dramatic would be to understate the effect to an extraordinary degree!
Would this hurt the nations selling the treasuries?
YES!
They MIGHT however be able to avoid this!
You see, annexation of a territory is in essence a two part operation. After all, we Brits know about this as we acquired the world’s largest empire!
You see, “part one” is the taking of physical possession of said territory – using the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines! “Part two” is the legal bit! A Bill of Annexation has to be presented to Parliament and after it’s passage through the Commons and the Lords, the Bill receives the Royal Assent and the said territory formally and legally becomes British!
Now, IF President Trump wishes to annex Greenland, he will have to do similar! Part One – the occupation of Greenland by the USN and the USMC is the easy bit! Part Two is where the Unfortunate Trump presents the Bill of Annexation to Congress!
One can ONLY hope that there are some people in Washington DC would will be able to talk President Trump out of committing an act of the grossest folly!
