Many people – not least the Governor and his staff at HM Prison Belmarsh – will be delighted to see Mr Assange set foot on Australian soil after walking free from a US court in Guam (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/world-69145409).
Many people in the USA miss a point. US sovereignty ends at it’s borders. Australia is an independent state! The US does not have jurisdiction over Australia. Nor does it have jurisdiction over the UK.
Unfortunately British politicians are prone to “take the knee” to demands from US administrations!
However, at the end of the day, things have worked out better for Mr Assange than they could have done. He has lost a dozen years of his life. Seven in the confines of the Ecuadorian embassy and five experiencing the much more austere comforts of His Majesty’s Prison, Belmarsh!
Although in no way could the experience of being held as a remand prisoner for five years in Belmarsh be described as a holiday, the experience is many many times better than being held as a convicted prisoner in one of the USA’s high security “correctional institutions”!
I hope that Mr Assange will be able to put the experience behind him and I hope that he and Mrs Assange can begin to build a happy life for themselves in Australia.
