These are strange times! The unexpected just keeps on happening!
With many of the UK’s politicians seeming hell bent on staging the most monumental train crash of Brexit, there are still some notable souls prepared to put their heads over the parapet and shout; “No! Don’t crash the train!”
One of these is the Right Honourable, The Lord Hain, PC.
His Lordship has of course the most impeccable of Europhile leftie credentials! His Lordship’s campaigning credentials are exemplary! His Lordship began his campaign career when he became chairman of the Stop The Seventy Tour campaign which disrupted tours by the South African rugby union and cricket teams in 1969 and 1970.
He then went on through the Liberals and to Labour having been; Minister of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs (28 July 1999 – 24 January 2001); Minister of State for Europe (11 June 2001 – 24 October 2002); Secretary of State for Wales (24 October 2002 – 24 January 2008) and also: Lord Privy Seal (13 June 2003 – 6 May 2005); Leader of the House of Commons (11 June 2003 – 6 May 2005); Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (6 May 2005 – 27 June 2007); Secretary of State for Work and Pensions (28 June 2007 – 24 January 2008). His Lordship then had a rest from double ministerial office until be became just Secretary of State for Wales (5 June 2009 – 11 May 2010).
His Lordship then has had much experience of government!
His Lordship is rightfully aghast at the seeming recklessness embarked upon by so many Brexiteers!
His Lordship however is a Democrat. His Lordship has been a doughty campaigner for Democracy for decades! He accepts therefore that the crucial thing to enable ANY democracy to succeed is the peaceful acceptance of the result by those who have lost!
What he (rightly) does NOT accept is that by winning the Brexit vote by 52/48% on Thursday 23rd June 2016, the Leave campaign did NOT receive a mandate to crash the economy big time.
His Lordship would no doubt wish to impress upon his opponents the following FACT:
That the average voter TRUSTS those they vote for have some basis of FACT for the arguments and statements they put forward. They make reasonable assumptions. Here, His Lordship would no doubt use the definition of “reasonableness” from English Common Law and the “man on the Clapham omnibus”. His Lordship would strongly suggest that the average voter would not expect that “Brexit” would result in a crashed economy and a massive slump. With the voter having to queue up in the shops for the basic commodities of life due to severe shortages – along the lines of the hardships faced by the long suffering citizens of Zimbabwe!
Yet the hardships endured presently by the good people of Zimbabwe will likely be experienced by the British People in the event of a failure to establish a so-called “trade deal” upon Brexit!
His Lordship therefore is appalled that any British politician should be prepared to risk such!
Consequentially he is going to insist on an amendment to the Withdrawal from the European Union (Article 50) Bill – to maintain membership of the EEA – when it reaches Their Lordships House!
The British Gazette wishes him all success!
