The election took place on Thursday 30 October.
Total number of valid first preference votes: 148,062
ALLEN David English Democrats – “Putting England First!” 8,583 Votes (5.8%)
BILLINGS Alan Labour Party Candidate 74,060 Votes (50.02%)
CLARKSON Jack UK Independence Party (UKIP) 46,883 Votes (31.66%)
WALKER Ian The Conservative Party Candidate 18,536 Votes (12.52%)
Number of ballot papers rejected at first count: 2,299
The turnout in the South Yorkshire Police Area at this election was 14.88%.
Alan Billings, Labour Party Candidate, has been elected as the Police and Crime Commissioner for South Yorkshire.
British Gazette Comment: Labour has won the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner by-election with 50 per cent of the vote. It avoided the contest moving to second preferences by 0.02 per cent, but it has won in every local authority area, including Rotherham, where it beat UKIP by 800 votes.
In our article of 3rd October, “South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Election: A Liberal Democrat NO SHOW.” we drew the reader’s attention to the Liberal Democrats decision not to fight the election. It is clear that had they done so, then UKIP would have had a chance of winning for many Conservative voters would have had UKIP as their second preference. It would only have needed 2,962 people who voted Labour to vote to have voted Liberal Democrat.
