That the man now known as Mr Mountbatten-Windsor has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office (a common law offence), has literally been broadcast around the world.
Herewith the BBC reportage (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/c70kjr9wjw0t).
I remember my 66th birthday. Like Mr Mountbatten-Windsor’s it fell on a Thursday. On that day I became eligible for the state pension! Mr Mountbatten-Windsor will remember his 66th birthday for less pleasant reasons!
Those advocating that the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland become the United Republic of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (https://www.republic.org.uk/) are over the moon!
It is said that support for the monarchy has slumped with support predominantly amongst the older demographics and with republicanism growing amongst the younger demographic.
IF the UK becomes the UR it will be a disaster!
Republicans have to answer ONE question: Who will take the monarch’s place as Head of State?
Their answer is of course; a person duly elected (by universal suffrage) to the position of President!
Of course, this country has a form of prior experience with this – and I am NOT referring to the Lord Protector, Oliver Cromwell! I am in fact referring to the Police and Crime Commissioners (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_and_crime_commissioner).
The Reader will note that ALL the PCCs are members of political parties. When the office was set up it was hoped that some of those elected would be independents. In their election manifestos nearly all the PCC candidates issued leaflets that were clearly party political and voters decided on the basis of partisan party politics. An honourable exception HAS to be made for the United Kingdom Independence Party or “UKIP” (https://www.ukip.org/) for that party’s candidates though campaigning under a party label stressed in their leaflets that they saw the role as essentially non political and were not going to be bound by a “party whip” if elected.
NB: No UKIP PCC candidates were ever elected.
Therefore, IF the younger demographic gets it’s way and the UK is replaced by the UR, we can expect a party politician to parade across the world as the nation’s head of state. A sad prospect!
One more thing: Do you recognise the woman in today’s image?
No?
It is Catherine Connolly, President of Ireland – and NO relation to Mrs Lucy Connolly!
Another question: Do you know the name of your local councillor?
Many Britons do not! IF the UK becomes the UR and we have an elected ceremonial president, I expect many Britons will not be able to name their nation’s head of state! Say what you like about His Majesty King Charles III; all mentally competent Britons know who he is!
