From https://www.royal.uk/news-and-activity/2023-11-29/the-king-will-visit-dubai-to-attend-cop28-uae:
His Majesty The King will visit Dubai, from Thursday 30th November to Friday 1st December 2023, to attend COP28 UAE, where His Majesty will address Heads of State, Heads of Government and delegates at the Opening Ceremony. The visit is at the invitation of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and at the request of His Majesty’s Government.
There are those who would not like to see HM attended the “Glow Bull Warning” jamboree in Dubai. There are those who would urge HM not to make a speech addressing the issue of CO2 and other gases and the climate. I am not among them!
A large number of politically active persons in the UK along with Alison Hernandez the Police & Crime Commissioner for Devon and Cornwall and Jim Colwell, Acting Chief Constable for Devon & Cornwall Police are firmly of the opinion that I am one of those outrageously dreadful “far right” “climate change deniers”!
And yet…… IMHO HM has been harping on about CO2 and “climate change” long before it became the “in thing” to talk about around the dining tables of Islington!
In the UK, every single loyal subject of HM and their dogs know that HM is passionate about this topic and yes, they know and expect the person sitting on the throne to stay clear of party politics and politically controversial issues leaving this area to elected politicians, but most are prepared to cut HM a little slack here.
From the Royal website it seems that HM will be making a “flying visit” departing the scene quickly so UK politicians including Mr Sunak can hug the limelight with perorations about how well they are doing in the march towards Net Zero.
When I think of HM and CO2 I think of one of HM’s predecessors, King Canute the Great, King of England from 1016, King of Denmark from 1018, and King of Norway from 1028 until his death in 1035. The three kingdoms united under Cnut’s rule are referred to together as the North Sea Empire. It was that North Sea that famously saw his courtiers place the throne in the way of the incoming tide.
This story of Canute resisting the incoming tide was first recorded by Henry of Huntingdon in his Historia Anglorum in the early twelfth century:
When he was at the height of his ascendancy, he ordered his chair to be placed on the sea-shore as the tide was coming in. Then he said to the rising tide, “You are subject to me, as the land on which I am sitting is mine, and no one has resisted my overlordship with impunity. I command you, therefore, not to rise on to my land, nor to presume to wet the clothing or limbs of your master.” But the sea came up as usual, and disrespectfully drenched the king’s feet and shins. So jumping back, the king cried, “Let all the world know that the power of kings is empty and worthless, and there is no king worthy of the name save Him by whose will heaven, earth and the sea obey eternal laws.”
Thus nearly a millennia before HM arrives in Dubai his Danish predecessor nailed it: The Earth and it’s atmosphere, it’s seas and it’s continents will do what they will do – and those pestilential nuisances “Just Stop Oil” and divers others will have HARDLY ANY effect whatsoever!
