‘Allo ‘Allo! was a brilliant sitcom television series, created by David Croft and Jeremy Lloyd starring Gorden Kaye, Carmen Silvera, Guy Siner and Richard Gibson. It was broadcast on BBC1 between 30 December 1982 and 14 December 1992.
Of one thing once can now be certain of: It would NOT be allowed to be broadcast today!
Readers (who remember the sitcom) will smile at today’s title as it was the reply (“You stupid woman!”) made to Madame Edith by René Artois Rene when he was caught in flagrante with Mademoiselle Yvette Carte-Blanche!
I use the line today as it is directed at one particular local (to West Penwith) woman. This woman (who shall not be named) occasionally stands in Market Square, St Just with a placard stating “White Silence is White Violence”. This woman’s political leanings require no further embellishment! Suffice it to say that if this woman is seeking examples of what she would describe as racism she could find a prominent example of such in the attitude of the Spanish Government to the wreck of Spanish galleon San Jose (https://www.popularmechanics.com/science/archaeology/a65025285/holy-grail-of-shipwrecks/)!
There is a diplomatic dispute between Colombia and Spain regards in excess of US $17 billion worth of gold coins. The gold was extracted by slave labour in what is now Peru during the colonial period. Given this a reasonable man or woman (they on the Clapham omnibus) would consider the proper recipients of this vast sum would be the government of Peru!
Contrast this with the hand-wringing of the Church of England’s bishops vis-à-vis the so-called “reparations” to be paid to the benefit of the UK’s black population for the slave trade!
Of course, publishing this blog-post will bring down upon me a whole slew of outrage when next I show my face in West Penwith. I might even receive a “knock on the door” from my local police person!
