As this article is written the snow is settling on the ground. Soon the Christmas cards will be dropping through the letterbox reminding us with their scenes of snow bound cottages of those Victorian winters long ago. And now, at the beginning of the 21st century we are facing the coming climate that visited us at the beginning of the 19th Century.
Here, writ large across the globe is the testimony of the unstoppable magnificence of creation. The sun, of a size and power that is truly awesome to men’s minds, set like a tiny speck of diamond amidst the galactic ocean that is the Milky Way. The Earth our home, giant Jupiter and our own silvery moon, so large (in relation to the earth) that astronomers refer to the two as the earth-moon combination. It is these mighty and utterly irresistible forces that create the climate. Mere men can do nothing to stop the wind, change the tide and alter the rainfall.
And yet, we have, to quote the Spirit of Christmas Present, “to hear the Insect on the leaf pronouncing…” – that the poor and the huddled elderly must pay ever more of there meagre incomes to heat their homes in order to reduce their CO2 emissions – such as the insect Miliband Minor, below.Charles Dickens (below) was indeed one of this country’s greatest authors. He combined a magnificent gift of storytelling with cutting social commentary which will have earned him little appreciation with the moneyed classes of the day.

When I saw this marvellous photo’ I immediately thought of Winston’s words. Do you not think that perhaps we are seeing the beginning of the implosion of the biggest political act of treachery in modern times? Those poor Irish, brow beaten into Lisbon…..and yet, might they now be serving a greater purpose?
