It was Georges Jacques Danton (above) who famously gave us the quote; “audacity, more audacity, and ever more audacity”. Danton was describing his fellow revolutionaries that embarked on the Reign of Terror.
Danton a leader of the Indulgents (moderates) ended up on the sharp side of Madame Guillotine. As he was being led up the the guillotine he made a prescient comment and one that can apply to the present collection of imbéciles that make up HMG: “I leave it all in a frightful welter,” he said; “not a man of them has an idea of government.”
One is perforce left to wonder however if all is as crazy as it appears. This organ has on previous occasions suggested that this whole affair is a grand coup de théâtre; the extent to which there is or is not co-operation or complicity betwixt the parties (UK & EU) is not known.
What is of no doubt was that the result of the referendum of Thursday 23rd June 2016 was not only historic; it was also unwanted!
– It was not wanted by the EU!
– It was not wanted by the USA!
– It was not wanted by the CBI!
– It was not wanted by the Bank of England!
– It was not wanted by the airlines!
– It was not wanted by the Road Haulage Association!
– It was not wanted by the bankers!
– It was not wanted by the City [of London]!
– It was not wanted by the Peoples Republic of China!
– It was not wanted by the Trades Union Congress!
– It was not wanted by the Institute of Directors!
– It was not wanted by the Pope!
– It was not wanted by the Archbishop of Canterbury!
– It was not wanted by the ferry operators!
– It was not wanted by the shipping companies!
– It was not wanted by the major port operators!
– It was not wanted by the pharmaceutical companies!
– It was not wanted by the automotive industry!
– It was not wanted by the universities!
– It was not wanted by the farmers and landowners!
– It was not wanted by the Irish! (North & South)
– It was not wanted by the Scots!
– It was however wanted by a certain Mr Farage and some others of his acquaintance, the English, the fishermen and the Welsh!
Overall, the vote was 52/48% Leave/Remain.
Since that time, Her Majesty’s Government have prevaricated, procrastinated and argued amongst themselves. Ministers have crossed Europe to make speeches on how they wish the UK to have a close relationship with the EU. But it has all been waffle! NO serious negotiation has really begun!
And as of today there are 249 days to Brexit Day!
More immediately, there are 87 days to Thursday 18th October 2018: the day of the European Council Meeting!
Authoritative commentators such as Doctor Richard North (http://eureferendum.com/) are suggesting that barring a miracle, the country is going to go over a cliff at 11:00PM on Friday 29th March 2019.
As we get closer to the cliff edge one begins to suspect that the calls for a second referendum will become overwhelming.
Were a second referendum to be held on the question: Do you want The European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018 (c. 16) repealed? And there was a majority for repeal, then the ECJ would agree to Article 50 being repealed. There would however be a price to pay!
