Frenchman’s Creek is a tidal reach that forms part of the beautiful Helford River. The Kestle Barton arts centre (Manaccan, Helston, Cornwall. TR12 6HU) is nearby. It is a beautiful part of the world and was made famous in 1941 by Daphne du Maurier with her historical romantic novel of the same name with the principal characters Dona, Lady St. Columb Jean-Benoit Aubéry – a French pirate.
Go to Frenchman’s Creek and you will immediately see – unless of course you happen to have the misfortune to be the Right Honourable Michael Gove, PC, MP, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and the Member for Surrey Heath – that the reach is extremely shallow (when the tide is in – it is a mud flat when the tide is out) and no vessel of any size can use it as an anchorage. Which means that Aubéry and his men would have to have used sailing dingies!
Gormless Gove of course receives a mention due to his seeming inability to recognise that the UK is now precariously close to a no deal!
