I do not know precisely what reception his USI (Ukraine Surrender Instrument) The Unfortunate Donald expected it to have – I (thankfully) cannot look into his mind – but he must at least have expected some kickback.
What is clear (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/nov/23/trump-says-ukraine-deal-is-not-final-offer-as-officials-gather-for-geneva-summit) is that he has realised that the terms will have to be revised – radically!
Generally speaking, politicians from across the spectrum from Jeremy Corbyn / Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on the left through to Dominic Grieve / Susan Collins in the centre to Nigel Farage / Kari Lake on the right know about “optics”!
However, it appears that The Unfortunate Donald pays scant attention to “optics”. I mean, trying to railroad Zelensky into signing a document he was incapable of signing because it breached his nation’s constitution (as did Austria’s ultimatum to Serbia in 1914) is crass – but to issue a deadline of Thanksgiving is crass on steroids!
This level of crassness of course is something that my fellow Britons will not be as aware of because they do not celebrate Thanksgiving (our history provides no reason to) and because of their lack of appreciation of the celebration’s significance, do not appreciate the sheer level of crassness in forcing a deadline for de facto surrender terms on this day.
What the above mentioned six politicians WILL be aware of (due to their connections) will be the level of emphatic statements of concern delivered to the White House and the State Department by the European powers and other NATO members such as Canada. It is of note that NONE of these major figures have publicly condemned the The Unfortunate Donald’s USI but behind the scenes the communications will have left the White House and the State Department in no doubt about the strength of feeling on this matter!
The western leaders plus the Japanese know that were The Unfortunate Donald to punish Ukraine for refusing to surrender to Russia by withdrawing satellite targeting data (the most serious sanction that the USA could take) the result will be increased civilian causalities and fatalities in Ukraine’s cities.
Were The Unfortunate Donald so pig headed to carry out such a denial of support the reaction of Congress would likely result in another Discharge Petition requiring the reinstatement of such support and possibly going further in dictating additional measures such as further sanctions and possible increase in munitions including possibly Tomahawk cruise missiles.
