Seizing defeat from the jaws of victory?

It is now the considered collective opinion gathered from all the recent election results and the polling data showing a consistent large Labour lead over the Conservatives that many people are assuming that whenever Mr Sunak decides to go to the country, the result will be a Labour landslide with the new occupant of No. 10 being Sir Keir Starmer.

This view is now shared by most Tory MPs.

To quote the late Lord Stockton however: “Events Dear Boy. Events………”

The recent attack by Hamas terrorists in southern Israel and the so-far limited response (at the time of posting) by Israel has demonstrated that there is a vast ocean of anti-Semitism circulating in the UK, the EU, Australia, Canada and the USA.

Comparisons – in-re the anti-Semitism – have been made with 1930s Germany. The circumstances – then and now – are completely and fundamentally different. Elements of the mainstream media have reported upon the disturbing reappearance in Berlin of the Shield of David being painted the premises of Jewish owned business.

The mainstream media are right to report upon this. However, they are only half reporting matters.

In 1930s Germany the anti-Semitism was driven by the Nazis, their supporters and sympathisers. The author of this was of course one Adolf Hitler. Hitler saw the world in terms of a racial struggle. He had an obsession with what he defined as the Ayran race. Basically someone who looked like this:

And now for something completely different:

As for today, when looking at many of the demonstrators shouting pro Hamas slogans, they do not meet the requirements to be regarded as the Nazi ideal man! In other words, the demographics of these particular anti-Semites in 2023 are (for the most part) completely different and reflect the demographic changes that have occurred in UK, the EU, Australia, Canada and the USA in recent times.

The motives of the 2023 crop of anti-Semites are (for the most part) completely different from the motives of the 1930s German anti-Semites.

Following the recent terrorist attack the response of Labour’s leader Sir Keir Starmer has been calm, measured and also clear in his unequivocal condemnation of the atrocities carried out upon innocent Israeli civilians by those whom the BBC still insist on calling “militants”.

That Sir Keir Starmer’s recent statements could be regarded as inappropriate and supportive of Zionism would be regarded by most reasonable people as not only absurd but extremely objectionable.

Clearly however not all Labour Party members would endorse the above statement. One who clearly would not would be the woman featured in the image at the head of this blog-post!

The woman is a certain Ms Mairéad Healy who represents the good people of Romsey Ward on Cambridge City Council. Elected as a Labour councillor, Ms Healy has seen fit to resign from the Labour Party and to sit as an independent due to Sir Keir Starmer’s reaction to the terrorist attack.

Ms Healy wants the Labour Party to be far more supportive of the “Palestinian cause” and to be critical of Israel’s reaction to the terrorist attack carried out upon it’s own citizens.

Ms Healy is not alone insofar as Labour activists are concerned. Many Labour Party members feel as she does and many of these are from a different demographic than Ms Healy.

Thus, IF Israel continues with it’s present military responses or IF it escalates the military response, we can expect many more Labour Party members to be very dissatisfied with Sir Keir Starmer if he continues to support the line being pursued by Mr Sunak!

IF the situation in the Middle East gets even more serious than it already is and the conflict escalates and continues for an extended period and the front benches of the Conservative and Labour and Liberal Democrat parties pursue a continuing policy of cross party consensus, then Labour’s lead might slip away for the British Public punish divided parties with extreme tendencies severely.
